ASUS Eee PC 1000H 160GB5
The 1000H arrived on 9/24/08. It worked just fine out of the box after going through the setup. The display is very bright, I had to set the brightness 2/3 of the way down.

I did manage to "scrooch" XP trying to install Trend Micro 2007 and I had to do a restore using the ASUS restore DVD with a Lite-On DX-8A1H external USB CD/DVD drive. This took 15 minutes.

ASUS includes a 90-day trial version of Eset Nod32 anti-virus. I am using this and the Windows Firewall. There is minimal junk-ware pre-installed and what there is can be easily removed if you don't activate it first.

The keyboard is very useable and there is almost no flex in it. I didn't buy the Eee PC to write an encyclopedia, I bought it for when we travel to read email, etc. The touchpad operation/sensitivity can be improved by going into the hardware setup and setting the touchpad sampling rate to 20, the minimum value.

The wireless b/g/n connection works well with my Linksys WRT54G2 router and I can see and logon to several neighbors' networks as well.

I haven't tested the battery run-time but the battery meter with a wireless connection and the Bluetooth turned off indicates at least 5 hours after a full charge.

The included neoprene sleeve is excellent, I intend to carry the Eee PC in the sleeve inside an 11" boarding bag when we travel.

I'm very impressed5
So I got this bad boy in via UPS this morning and so far I am very pleased. I selected super saver shipping and got this in two days of it becoming instock after preorder phase so that was pretty cool. Anyway back to the item in hand. It definetly lives up to the hype and i'll tell you why...

It is very sexy looking for a net book and when I showed a couple neighbors they where impressed with it's look as well.

It is easy to type on for the most part. There is a slight adjustment to the placement of certain keys but I don't believe it should take more than a week to get into that comfort zone. I've used smaller netbooks and this one is a vast improvement in terms of size.

Bluetooth is awesome! I conected to my bluetooth enabled Samsung Yp2 mp3 players and performed a wireless transfer of a few movies and some music. I'm sure when it is time for me to connect to my cell phone for internet access it will work just as easily. BTW wireless N is the shiznit.

Oh yeah this thing has XP which I hate to say is just outright better than vista. I've tried to like my vista Acer laptop but it just sucks. Its dual core and all but it feels much slower than this ASUS.

Oh yeah it is whisper quite and does not get hot at all. Hardly even qualifies as warm after running Rhapsody, and having several tabs on Opera open at once.

But I will admit that while the screen is super bright and unreflective the picture was not as sharp as I invisioned. I mean it is still pretty crisp, but not quiet what I expected (although my expectations were through the roof after reading reviews of the 80gb model.)

Hope this little review of mine helps any buyers out there narrow down there choices. Holla.

Asus Eee PC's 901, 1000h, 1000 Compared Side by Side

The original EEE PC was announced in 2007 and was known as the 701, it was almost certainly one of the most talked about computers shortly after its launch.

The specs of the EEE PC 701 were not that impressive, it featured pretty basic technology. The reason it was popular? Well that's because it is so tiny, and very reasonably priced. The fact that the early versions only ran Linux didn't seem to put people off either. Asus did however ship the EEE PC with windows drivers so that it was possible to install windows on it yourself if you wanted.

The 901 is an 8.9" version of the EEE PC which is powered using Intel's new Atom processor and was launched to update the product line. Although the Atom doesn't add much speed to the computer it does make it much more efficient in terms of battery life.

The 1000 model is one of the most anticipated computer releases of the year! It has received some very good reviews. Asus will also release a 1000H model which is identical in spec apart from it using a conventional 80GB hard drive rather than the 40GB SSD. This will be the first ever EEE PC to contain a hard drive.

Comparing the specs:

Asus EEE PC 701 (original)- 7" 800x480, Linux Only (Windows drivers included), 900MHz Celeron (underclocked to 630Mhz), 802.11n wireless networking, 512MB - 1GB DDR2, 2 - 8GB SSD, 895 - 990g.

Asus EEE PC 901 (8.9") - 8.9" 1024x600 Windows XP Home or Linux, Intel Atom Processor, 802.11n wireless networking, 1 GB DDR 2, 20GB SSD, 1.1kg.

Asus EEE PC 1000 (10") - 10"/10.2" 1024x600, Windows XP Home or Linux Intel Atom Processor, 802.11n wireless networking, 2 GB DDR 2, 40GB SSD, 1.33kg.

Asus EEE PC 1000H (10" with HDD) - 10"/10.2", 1024x600 Windows XP Home or Linux Intel Atom Processor, 802.11n wireless networking, 2 GB DDR 2, 80GB SSD, 1.45kg.

As you should be able to see, the new models are a great improvement on the older spec, however people that want a small computer still have to put up with the pretty dire specs of the 701. As a second computer the original EEE PC is ideal. Newer models are being shipped with better specs and even Windows XP installed as standard, this makes them a much more enticing and useful computer.

Many other computer manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon to provide small computers like the EEE PC; other examples include the HP MiniNote 2133 and Lenovo's X300. Many of these models are also available in different configurations, including conventional and SSD hard drives.

What does the future have in store for the EEE PC? Only time will tell, if you listen to the rumors then there are even plans to launch a desktop EEE PC onto the market at some time in the future. The future looks very bright for all sub notebook computers, especially for the EEE PC, which is perhaps the most famous of them all!

Asus Eee PC Reviews on Amazon

Considering Buying Asus Eee PC 1000? Read This First!

Even if you don't know much about Asus you have probably almost certainly heard about the EEE PC, it's a very popular sub notebook computer. It was the first affordable subnotebook, or netbook computer to be launched.

The original EEE PC's had 7" screens which was far too small for most people. Recently Asus has added two new models to its line, including the EEE PC 901 and EEE PC 1000. The 901 has a larger screen and is available in both Windows XP and Linux configurations. Although the 901 is a great computer more people are excited about the EEE PC 1000. These are more expensive than the original EEE PC's, however they are still very good value. So what's the EEE PC 1000 got?

  • 10" Screen
  • 92% size keyboard compared to standard laptop keyboards
  • 1.6GHz Intel Atom Processor
  • A choice of windows XP or Linux
  • 40GB SSD

Asus also produce an EEE PC 1000H model which is identical in spec, with the exception of the SSD being replaced with an 80GB conventional hard drive.

The 1000H is the first EEE PC to come with a conventional hard drive. This machine is designed to compete with the already popular HP Mininote computer. The only real complaint that people had with the original EEE PC was that the keyboard and screen size was a little too small. Now thanks to the 901 and 1000 there are two different options people have available.

The EEE PC 1000 is available with Windows XP preinstalled, or a Linux version. The Linux version is cheaper than the XP version; however XP will make it much easier for more people to use. Again this could be in line with competing machines.

The keyboard size is a very impressive improvement, the keyboard is only slightly smaller than a standard laptop computer keyboard it's actually 92% the size of a standard laptop computer keyboard. This makes typing much easier than with the original models; the cramped keyboard was actually one of the only complaints with the original EEE PC.

There will no doubt be plenty more EEE PC's released further down the line, what's in store for us? Well we'll have to wait to find out! A touch screen would be a fantastic addition to the EEE PC as it would make it even easier to use.

The great thing about these computers is that they are very affordable, even models with windows XP are much cheaper than many other subnotebook computers. All of the EEE PC 1000 models are run using Atom processors, which are a new processor created by Intel, this makes it very efficient to use. The EEE PC 1000 does not have any optical drives, and when using the SSD drive there are no moving parts inside the computer. This makes it the ideal PC to travel with.

EEE Asus - A Powerful Laptop That Is A Great Alternative To The MacBook Air

There's no question that the Macbook Air is the gold standard of tiny lap top computers. Apple has stuffed tons of features and power into a machine so slim it can fit into a large envelope. But, this tiny machine has a very high price tag, averaging about $1700. Many consumers love the technology but can not afford this high price. If you're attracted to the Mac for its size, but would like a cheaper alternative, take a look at the Asus EEE laptop computer.

Size And Weight: If your quest for a very small computer is what attracted you the Air, you should know that the Asus is an even smaller machine at only 1.383 x 8.823 x 6.5." It weighs a mere 2 pounds, (a pound lighter than the Mac). The EEE is about the size of a paperback while the Apple is the size of a text book (although it is the thinner of the two).

These two models differ in several ways, as follows: The Macbook has a 13.3" LCD display, 2GB of Ram, an 80GB hard drive and runs on the Leopard operating system. The Asus has a 7" LCD display, 512 MB of Ram, a 2-4 GB hard drive and runs on a custom Linux Distro operating system.

Price: Pricing is the hugest difference between the two models. The Mac starts at over $1,000 and the loaded model is $1700 or more. You can generally pick up the EEE for somewhere between $250 and $400 if you know where to look.

Bottom Line: Which model is best for you depends on what you are looking for in a computer. If you're just looking for a small computer on which to complete basic functions, there seems no reason to pay the extra money. The cheaper version is great for students. However, if you truly need the additional memory or you prefer the Leopard operating system, you will probably prefer the Apple.

Asus Eee PC Review

The Asus EEE PC is hot, hot, HOT! Who would have thought that a sub-compact laptop would become so popular in a world where "bigger is better"? Everyone wants more storage and bigger screens and more features - and yet these small computers grow in sales every month!

The first surprise is that the Asus EEE PC is a sub-compact laptop that runs on "Linux" and not Windows. Right away that pigeonholes the purchasers to geeks and technophiles. The Macbook and Mac air are both geeky devices, and Mac's OS share went from 9% to 14% from 2007-2008. Linux use on low-end PC's is growing, the Everex gPC sold at Wal-Mart online sold out. Consequently, the gPC got pulled from Wal-Mart retail shelves, probably because geeks don't shop in brick and mortar stores for tech gear. Currently, the Asus Eee PC 4G Surf is in the Amazon top 10 lists for "Computers and Hardware" beating out all Apple models.

Why is it that Makes the Asus Eee PC so popular?

I think one obvious point it that it's cheaper than an iPhone, but a fully fledged computer. Both the screen and keyboard are smaller than a conventional laptop, but completely usable. If you're tired of carrying around a PDA type phone with a folding keyboard from hell or tiny thumbkeys - why not just get an Asus EEE PC? It's probably around the same money.

Features:

- affordable pricetag (from $300-$500)

- Built in camera (0.3 megapixel 30fps)

- Durable Solid State Drive (4-20GB SSD)

- MMC / SD memory card slot and 3 USB Ports

- 512MB - 2GB RAM

- 800x480 screen resolution

- Wifi b/g 10/100 wired connections

- Xandros Linux installed

- Great for Personal Use

- Only 2 lbs

- No bigger than a hardcover book

The company that makes these (Asustek) predicts selling 2 million units in 2008. That's significant for a Linux based OS. It should be no surprise however that one of the most popular hacks is to convert the Asus Eee PC to Windows XP (if you have a valid license of course). Linux is great, but some of the most popular complaints in Amazon comments for the Eee PC are that it's not user-friendly or for the first time Linux user. That's where the geek factor comes into play. The happiest customers for the Eee are geeks that have no problems configuring and using Linux. Even though the Xandros distribution is very user-friendly, your average non-geek might run into problems when plugging in their store bought iPod, printer, or digital camera. Comment squakers will attest to this, but geeks will boast how easy-to-use and configurable it is.

So - it may be no surprise that Asustek is going to play to the masses and release a Windows XP version of the Asus Eee PC installed from the factory. In just the last month the Asus Eee PC 4G and 12G have been released with Windows XP Home installed. The main difference most will notice between the 4G and 12G an increased screen size to 8.3", allowing a default 1280x600 resolution (much closer to a standard desktop). With the Windows versions selling well, Asus should have no problems reaching their 2008 sales goals.

That does raise the price slightly, but at just over $500 it's not much more than an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. All in all the "bang for the buck" is pretty good with the Eee PC considering how much high end gaming systems and cell phones cost. Small portable computers are going to get more and more popular, will you be the next to buy one?

Asus Eee Laptop Review

The Asus Eee is the fantastic new laptop from Asus which is affordable, lightweight, and full of features.

Eee stands for 'Easy to learn', 'Easy to work', and 'Easy to play'. The Asus Eee succeeds on all three of these aims!

At 225 by 35 by 165mm the Asus Eee is the size of a hardback book and weighing only 920g it is equally compact. The beauty of the Asus Eee is the versatility afforded by its size; it can be used almost anywhere with ease. It is already proving very popular with students and casual computer users alike who want to work, watch video, listen to music, and access the internet on the move.

With a solid-state hard drive the Asus Eee gives greater reliability and is resistant to shock damage which is perfect for computing on the move.

Don't be fooled by it's small size. Asus have crammed an amazing amount of functionality into this little laptop. It comes with Ethernet slot and Wi-Fi for connecting online, a SD/MMC memory card slot, and three USB 2.0 card slots. For those IM fans or those wishing to make video calls the Asus Eee comes with an in-built camera and microphone so it is also possible to webcam on the move!

The Asus Eee comes pre-installed with a Linux based operating system specially created to be easy to use and full of features. All the applications you need are pre-installed: Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird for web browsing and email, Open Office which is an alternative to Microsoft Office, a media player, and much more. If you wish to install Windows XP you can do so. However it is unlikely you will need to do so as the Linux operating system provides everything you are likely to need, with the added bonus of being highly secure.

Asus Eee PC 2G Surf Reviews

Asus Eee PC 2G Surf (7-inch Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB RAM, 2 GB Hard Drive, Linux Preloaded) Pure White

Customer Reviews

Surpassed expectations5
I was pleased with the performance of this little wonder. First thing I did was increase the RAM to 2 GB and have never looked back. As the owner of several group homes, I keep the medical records of each resident on this machine (password protected) which beats the alternative of carrying their medical folders with me for doctors visits. The only shortcoming I have found is the touch pad is to sensitive for my heavy hand, but using a small mouse solved that problem instantly. And during those long waits for the doctor the resident and I can watch movies saved to a 16 GB DS Card, LOL The screen is large enough to read and having a wireless built-in is fantastic. I am looking to buy the newer model with 16GB and windows in the near future.

Birthday Present for my Wife5
This product was a real hit with my wife. I got the Asus EeePC for my wife as a present so she could practice her hobby, writing, without having to lug around the weight of a full laptop. I was initially a little concerned that the Linux interface would be uncomfortable for her as she normally uses a MS Windows laptop for work, however, I shouldn't have worried. This sub notebook is so simple to use, and easy to carry, that she hasn't let the thing out of her sight since I got it a few weeks ago. As for Microsoft's applications, she hasn't missed them one bit, and it doesn't hurt that the applications save your work in files which can be read by Microsoft office when you copy them off the EeePC.

Excellent purchase5
Using my Asus Eee PC is great. I like it for surfing the Internet and the pop up blocker is really worth it. I like the fact that only a website I allow can open a new window on my computer. Great! Also, The office programs are really nifty. I use the spreadsheet and word editor frequently. This laptop is easy to use in limited space making it easy to put away when not in use. It's very fast and in my case I use the built in wi-fi to connect my high speed connection really easily. The two USB ports are nice because later on I can upgrade to CD-RW for burning mp3's while the Monitor output will increase the viewable size connecting to my LCD TV. The Frozen bubble game is really fun. Finally, I appreciate this pc as being very affordable.

Customer Reviews

eee pc 901 awesome5
well ever since my dad got one of those fijitsu 5 inch umpc I knew I just had to get a mini laptop of my own. I'm glad that I looked into a bigger screen, even though for some reason I thought that 8.9 inches was going to be pretty big. I just got my computer today and it is excellent! It is so small! Compared to the pictures this thing is a lot smaller. But it is the perfect size. Any smaller and it would have been too small. I am actually writing this review from it right now. It runs pretty fast. Almost to exact same speed as my regular laptop. Flash games seem to play a tad bit slower. Also the keyboard is small and you DO have to get use to it. I keep having to go back and retype a few words because I hit the wrong key. But it is fun! The color is awesome. I love miniature stuff, and this has got to be the best thing to add to my collection. I highly recommend this product!!

Great portable system5
The keyboard is definitely too small to take dictation on, but it gets the job done, and makes the whole thing half the size of most laptops.

It runs all day, with awesome standby/wake times. It's just powerful enough to play World of Warcraft on, and older games work great. Web browsing is great, and the multitouchpad is nice, but not as amazing as I thought it would be.

The back panel lets you easily upgrade ram to 2gb, and you can upgrade the SSDs there also (coming out with 16 and 32 gb ssd replacements I hear).

The SD card slot works as a cheap and easy expansion also, I run WoW off that (using a logitech 470 nano wireless mouse, while my wife uses our main screen from next to me on the couch)

My wife usually carries it in her purse and we love it.

ASUS Eee PC 9015
Excellent choice for me. It does everything that I want it to do and not heavy to lug around. I can cope with the short on memory by using flsh drives, etc.I'm not a touch typist so the small keyboard does not bother me.

Got one for myself, another for my wife5
This a great full featured laptop that you can always carry with you wherever you go. I am an IT guy and I love it - it has everything I need. When my wife saw this laptop, she had a very positive emotional reaction. The next day I caught her using :-) and loving it. She liked it so much (especially being able to carry it in her purse) that I decided to get her another (white) Eee. She now takes it everywhere she goes. She even got herself a bluetooth phone so that she can get online where no Wi-Fi networks are available.

One piece of advice to novice/first-time buyers - get a Linux version (Asus 901 20G). No worries about viruses (no need to install a slow and resource eating anti-virus/anti-everything software). The boot time of Linux version is truly amazing. Works right out of the box.

I have another friend who got it as well. He does a lot of blogging, browsing and email. He loves it. He switched from a Windows laptop and does not regret a thing.

Great and Portable5
If you travel a lot and you have a desktop at home this is a great choise.

Just a week ago our family friends visited us, played with Eee PC and got two of them for their kids.

Of course, they are a few issues with the product, after all no product is ideal. The keyboard is a bit small, but after enough practice you will find yourself typing at normal speeds. The software that comes with it is not going to be enough for advanced users or developers (but there is Ubuntu EEE distro and other tweaks and kicks that you can install on EeePC free of charge ;-)).

This product is a leading laptop in the netbook family and I recommend it to anyone who wants a light-weight, always-with-you laptop.

A great little portable Web Browser and PC5
Got this from Amazon whilst in the States on holiday. A great little machine that I have been tweaking since I got back home. Now runs Firefox 3 and the usual add-ons. BBC iPlayer works perfectly on this machine and in full screen as does YouTube. In effect, it is like having a media player for your lap especially when a good pair of headphones are plugged in.

The machine also works perfectly with a Vodafone Mobile Broadband "pebble" - a small program automatically opening up to facilitate connection which works perfectly. Wireless connection to my home network is problem free, I can load pics from my camera's SDHC card for upload to Flickr and I can connect my iPod Nano to it. Battery life is excellent. All I need now is a suitable cord for charging it from the car 12v power supply.

ASUS Eee PC 1000H 80G

Customer Reviews

I love it!5
I bought an Asus Eee PC 701 4G as a secondary laptop when they first came out and was the envy of everyone that saw it. I immediately installed an nlited version of XP Pro and installed 1GB of ram. I thought I really had something and liked it even though the screen was a little small for me.

Then I heard about 900 and the 901. Pass! Not impressed. Then along came the Eee PC 1000H. Right up my alley. Had to have it. Sold my 701 and ordered the 1000H. LOVE IT, LOVE IT! As others have noted, the right shift key is out of place, but I am not a touch typist so it doesn't matter to me. Not crazy about the glossy exterior finish because it shows every little smudge of a finger print, but again, only a minor annoyance. The LED backlit display is really bright. So much so that you can turn it way down and still see it good while also conserving battery power. I like the nice sized multi-touch trackpad, although the buttons are a little stiff. My favorite feature is the built in bluetooth. Yes I know they now make itty bitty dongles that you can leave in the computer, but I don't want anything sticking out the side of my computer. Besides, it would then be taking up an otherwise useful usb port. With one mouse click I can connect to my T-Mobile Blackberry Curve through bluetooth to sync, transfer a file or connect to the internet and not miss a call. I love that! I also use a bluetooth Microsoft 5000 laptop mouse, bluetooth stereo headset for watching movies or listening to music, and my bluetooth headset for my phone also works with Skype.
The much improved camera resolution is great with Skype. I don't know where they got that 7hr battery life spec from. I seem to get about 4.5 - 5hrs with wifi and bluetooth on. I could go on and on, but you get the point, it's just great.

I read a lot of reviews and was initially leaning toward the MSI Wind until the price of the 1000H came down, then it was a no brainer for me. I didn't get into all the technical aspects of it because there are plenty of tech reviews for that. I just want to let you know my overall opinion coming from an average Joe with 2 desktops (1 Dell, 1 HP) and 3 other laptops (1 Sony, 2 Dells), that I am more than pleased with my 1000H and will be using it MUCH more than the 701 4G it replaced. By the way, I didn't notice the keyboard flex or fan noise that others have mentioned.

I love Amazon for the free shipping and no tax. Go Amazon!

Eee PC 1000 XP 6-Cell3
This is a beautiful computer. It has a shiny, smooth, black case that is much more attractive than I thought it would be. It boots up om less than a minute and you're ready to go.

On the downside, the keyboard is very small, but this wouldn't be a problem if the touch pad weren't so sensitive. You must constantly watch the screen when you're typing or else you'll lose track of the cursor. I use a wireless mouse, but when using a mouse the touch pad does not disable. This is more of a problem than you might think. You have to be very careful when you're typing. XP works well and Works has a great word processor. I tried to download Norton, but I kept getting a message that it won't work with this version of XP. For the Internet, I downloaded Firefox. However Forefox and Explorer drop out very once in a while. You'll be in the middle of a search, and suddenly you're back to your desktop. I got the six cell battery and I'd guess the real life using the word processor is about 4.5 hours, but I haven't run it completely out.

All in all, I love this computer. I bought it to write out on the road and, for that purpose it works great. The next time I buy one, however, I will opt for a larger keyboard, and a disabled touch pad.

Eee PC 1000H "Excellent Product"5
Received Eee PC 1000H today on time. Opened it up and followed installation instructions. Set Up was very easy, I got on internet using "Wired Connection" and "WireLess Connection" I can type on key board just like a full size computer. EXCEPT: As noted by others "Right Shift Key" is a pain to use. I can live with that though. Other than that I am very happy with purchase. I used it for 4 hours pluged into AC power, it never got overly warm. I am thinking of buying a second one for my wife. Comes with nice slip case w/zipper. I also ordered a stick of 2GB memory to replace the 1GB stick, but it has not arrived, yet. But, to tell you the truth it runs very fast, just using 1 GB. I installed firewall, Antivirus and surfed internet, at same speeds as my desktop. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS LAPTOP.

It is very good!5
It starts up and shuts down in seconds. It is very fast. The screen is clear. It has a built in camera. It has a lot of nice features. If you dont type very long documents because of the small keyboard, this is a very good laptop. I actually chose this over a Macbook. Portability is a big selling point.

Little and Faster5
Hi,

The portable one fulfills all the expectations that I had. He is very fast and light. I retired the operating system to him that brought and I installed Debian to him. I am very contented with the purchase that I did.

Best eeePC 900 linux5
this is a great product... a "regular" computer takes me about a day to get set up and working.. the eee linux is easy to turn on and took about 10 minutes to get set up..

our company uses this for instore audits and simple tasks.
as long as you use the many great built-in applications, then you will love this computer, too.

if you are looking at lots of other app's, then look at the windows xp version and shut off updates as they make the computer longer to shut down.. i prefer linux as it's simpler and a bit faster..

the only difficulty is having other app's not designed to work with linux work with the eee. there is an eee user's
forum which helps with this.. but success is not assured.

i am very impressed with the eee.. and so far love it even more than its competitors..

Asus Eee PC, Very Nice Portable Notebook!

By Michael L. Willis

The mini-lap top by Asus EeePC is the perfect answer for someone who travels. It allows me to keep up on my emails, I can watch movies(I have eight movies downloaded on an 8gb sdhd card), I can review my daily photography results and I can surf the web. It is light weight as advertised (2 lbs.) and yet large enough that it is no problem to use.
I was contemplating buying a 12 inch laptop, at approx. $1500 but this 9 inch laptop meets all my needs for $550. One of the best purchases that I have ever made. I am an older retired person in my late 60's and would not generally be thought of as a computer geek, but I get identified as one with my new gadget, quite an experience.

We like this EEE much better than the Linux based one. It runs programs designed for Windows perfectly and yet maintains the ultraportablity. We have a cellular modem we plug into a USB port and we can hit the net riding down the road. It is great for travelling. No need for lugging another case, just toss this in your suitcase and you are on your way!
